We live in an age of information overload. A large percentage of what inundates us is mere sound bites, often calculated and full of spin. These do little to develop thoughtful competence for the complexities of life. We need a source of genuine counsel that has stood the test of time: Proverbs is that place. The book of Proverbs is a gospel primer on life in the real world.
The book of Proverbs shows that God put order in the world: when we understand and live according to that order we live wisely in the innumerable challenges life brings. Proverbs are God’s protection for the tempted, his rebuke for the proud, his mercy for the broken, his encouragement for the faint-hearted, and his guidance for the perplexed. In this precious book is wisdom for all of life.
Becoming wise is nothing more and nothing less than becoming like Jesus Christ, from whom all wisdom comes. We will study Proverbs for the first several months of 2016 in three difference sermon series. First, “Understanding Wisdom” will provide foundational truths about wisdom and the motives that drive its pursuit. Second, “Living Wisely” will tackle many of the great themes of life, which are also the great themes of Proverbs. Finally, “Social Currency” will help us all grapple with the need for wisdom in every day relationships.
