Brothers and Sisters,

Sunday reminded us that we were born to worship.  Worship has been defined as, “Assigning ultimate value to someone or something and, as a result, choosing to live your life for the person or thing.”  Therefore, the most crucial question one can ask themselves is, “What do I worship?”  If what you worship is not worthy of such devotion and attention then your life has little hope of being full of joy because “what we revere, we resemble, either for ruin or restoration.” (Beale)

Notice where Psalm 96 directs its worship—The Lord! “For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols, but the Lord made the heavens.” (Ps 96:5)  He alone is worthy of such attention because he is great, he has done marvelous works, made the heavens, has strength, is majestic and beautiful, and will judge the earth.  He deserves our worship and we must ascribe to him what he is due by acknowledging his greatness.  Interestingly enough, when we do others will see and hear a clear proclamation of the salvation that is found in him alone (Ps 96:10).

Perhaps the most crucial thing you can do this week is evaluate the question, “What do I worship?”  The answer will reveal a lot about you and you will be able to determine if your joy will last.
